The Golden Leaf Foundation is providing a $10.8 million grant to Vidant Medical Center's new cancer center.
The money will fund major equipment inside the new tower that's nearing completion.
The hospital broke ground nearly three years ago on the $170 million cancer center and bed tower. The six-story, 96-bed facility is adjacent to the existing East Carolina Heart Institute.
Officials say the facility is much needed because eastern North Carolina has a much higher mortality rate for cancer diagnosis than the national average, and more than 7,500 new cases are diagnosed each year in this region.
