Foundation Gains New Leadership for its Second Century of Service to Forsyth County

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 17, 2021)—Today, the Foundation’s governing body, The Winston-Salem Foundation Committee, announces the appointment of LaTida Smith as the fifth president of the 101-year-old community foundation. Smith is the current president and CEO of the Moses Taylor Foundation, and she will join the Foundation’s staff on September 1, 2021.

Outer Banks Community Foundation Announces Christopher Sawin to Serve as its President and Chief Executive Officer

Southern Shores, NC, June 16, 2021 — The Outer Banks Community Foundation is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has voted unanimously to hire Christopher Sawin as President and Chief Executive Officer. Sawin, who comes to the Community Foundation from Dare County Arts Council, will officially start in his new role effective August 1. Sawin joins the Community Foundation at a challenging and exciting time in its nearly 40-year local history. He fills a role left vacant by Lorelei Costa, who departed in March 2021 to lead Suffolk (Virginia) Center for the Cultural Arts, after eight years of exemplary service to our community.

15 Community Collaboratives Selected for myFutureNC Local Educational Attainment Collaboratives launched by ncIMPACT Initiative

The UNC School of Government’s ncIMPACT Initiative announces the selection of 15 community collaboratives to an inaugural cohort working to better align their education systems with the needs of their regional economy, in partnership with myFutureNC. This intensive two-year project will position the cohort to significantly increase the number of individuals with postsecondary degrees, credentials, or certificates of value in the workforce. It aligns with the state’s legislative goal of 2 million individuals between the ages of 25-44 who possess a high-quality credential or postsecondary degree by 2030. Funding was provided by the John M. Belk Endowment, Dogwood Health Trust and UNC Rural.

WNC Bridge Foundation’s premier fundraising event, Drums & Dragons, launches registration June 7th at charityfootprints.com/DrumsAndDragons2021 Drums & Dragons is a great team-building experience enjoyed by local businesses and non-profits in our community. Golden LEAF Board awards $5.7 million at June meeting

At the June 2021 Board meeting, the Golden LEAF Board of Directors awarded $2.4 million in funding to support projects through the Open Grants Program, Community-Based Grant Initiative, and Disaster Recovery Grant Program. In addition, the Board awarded $1.75 million to N.C. Community College System to provide scholarships for community college students and $1.5 million to the Center for Creative Leadership to implement the leadership training component of the Golden LEAF Scholarship Program.

Golden LEAF announces award of 215 scholarships to rural high school seniors and community college transfer students

Golden LEAF is pleased to announce 215 new scholarships have been awarded to support students attending four-year colleges or universities in North Carolina this fall. This year’s scholarship recipients hail from 73 rural counties and most have lived in rural North Carolina all of their life. Students will receive $3,000 each year for up to four years of undergraduate study while attending a participating college or university.
