Fayetteville, NC – Cumberland Community Foundation invites students to apply for scholarships to attend college during 2017/2018 through its scholarship program.  Applications are available through the foundation’s website and through financial aid offices of local participating colleges. The awards budget is $685,000 for the 2017/2018 college year.

Detailed application instructions are now available on the foundation’s website (www.cumberlandcf.org).  The individual awards range in amount from $500.00 to $10,000.00, depending on the size of the scholarship endowment fund established by the donor.  Funding for the scholarships comes from endowments created by local individuals who value higher education and want to help others achieve their potential.  Each donor designed the eligibility, priorities, and application process for their scholarship endowment.

The deadline to apply for the awards is March 31, 2017.  Many awards are based on financial need and require applicants to submit their Student Aid Report or “SAR” which results from submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  “Some awards are not based on financial need, but most are,” said Susan Barnes, Scholarship Manager.  “If students have a valid email address, the Student Aid Report will be available online once the FAFSA has been completed.  Students should allow enough time to complete their FAFSA application online in order to upload the Student Aid Report into their application.”

Students may apply for the Robert H. Short / Cumberland Community Foundation Scholars Program directly through the financial aid offices of Fayetteville Technical Community College and Fayetteville State University and through the admissions office of Methodist University. Links are available on the foundation’s website.

There are five (5) new scholarship awards available for 2017.  The Cape Fear River Assembly Scholarship is available for students attending college in the Cape Fear River Basin who are majoring in environment science or other related fields.  The Devasthali Family Scholarship for Health Care Professionals is for students attending one of our local colleges and majoring is specified allied health professions.  The Manning Family Scholarship is for nontraditional students in our community who could not attend college right out of high school and wish to get back on track with their education and life opportunities.  The Pay It Forward Scholarship was created to allow young people to be educated, thrive and become self-sufficient in our society.  The Robert N.
