A strong alliance to build strong families.

Making a difference always starts with making a decision to do things differently.

Several years ago, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina (PCANC) and the NC Institute of Medicine convened a Child Maltreatment Taskforce to rethink the state’s approach to child abuse prevention and to improve overall infant health and development. The taskforce recommended expanding Nurse-Family Partnership in the state. As a result, PCANC brought together leaders from public and private agencies across the state to form an alliance. The group chose to build on the success of the first Nurse-Family Partnership program in Guilford County, recognizing the benefits of having one nurse dedicated to one family for the first two years of a child’s life.

The alliance of agencies included The Duke Endowment, The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation, The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, The North Carolina Partnership for Children, Inc., and Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina. Together, they committed to funding the creation of new Nurse-Family Partnership programs in North Carolina.

Today, Nurse-Family Partnership nurtures families in 10 North Carolina counties, and the alliance has set a new goal: to build a state infrastructure that will bring Nurse-Family Partnership to all of North Carolina’s most vulnerable first-time families. With the same level of dedication they’ve had from the beginning, the alliance members are committed to ensuring local Nurse-Family Partnership programs have the funding they need to provide high-quality services, engage their communities and remain sustainable.
