Philanthropy focus of new collection materials at State Library

8/19/2019
Nonprofit professionals looking for tools and strategies to do a better job can now find materials online or borrow from recently added items at the State Library of North Carolina’s Government and Heritage Library.

"The nonprofit and philanthropic sector is indispensable to the fabric of our state," says Timothy Owens, State Librarian of North Carolina. "This new collection gathers in one place an unprecedented resource for nonprofit and fundraising professionals, policymakers, government officials, regulators, scholars and others interested in the charitable world."

A rich collection of newspaper content

The collection items feature a complete edition of the Philanthropy Journal of North Carolina, 25 years of nonprofit reporting by Todd Cohen, its founding editor, and nearly 60 books, newspapers, reports, and articles he donated to the library.

The newspaper materials highlight 25 years of philanthropy columns that Cohen wrote for The News & Observer and Triangle Business Journal, both in Raleigh and for The Business Journal in Greensboro and Charlotte Business Journal. It includes national reporting on philanthropy by Cohen, a former News & Observer reporter and business editor, and a long-time contributor to The NonProfit Times. And it contains his reporting on Raleigh city government, and on state government and politics. Copies of Cohen’s columns and newspaper clippings are available as Charities in North Carolina, a set of 16 folders in GHL’s collection of vertical files.

Philanthropy Journal now online

Also, now available online are digitized issues of the Philanthropy Journal. Cohen, an adjunct instructor in writing at William Peace University in Raleigh, launched a weekly philanthropy column for The News & Observer in 1991 as the newspaper's business editor. In 1993, through The News and Observer Foundation, he created the Philanthropy Journal, the first statewide paper in the U.S. to report on nonprofits. He edited the Journal for nearly 20 years. Early issues of the publication from 1993 to 1998 can be viewed in the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center’s collection at http://www.digitalnc.org/newspapers/philanthropy-journal-of-north-carolina-raleigh-n-c/.
