The Fund for Haywood County issues grants to help people, beautify the area, boost revenue

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Ongoing efforts to improve many aspects of life in Haywood County just got a financial boost from a charitable organization. The aptly named The Fund for Haywood County has issued grants to help people, beautify the area and even boost revenues.

This year, the nonprofit has about $65,000 to divvy out to more than a dozen agencies around the county. The idea is to improve the overall quality of life.

“The Fund for Haywood County is an affiliate program of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina,” said Adam Bridges, Advisory Board Chair for The Fund for Haywood County.

Dare and Currituck Foster Children’s Fund Established at Outer Banks Community Foundation

A new endowed fund to support the needs of local foster children has been established by a Southern Shores couple at Outer Banks Community Foundation. Gary Reed is a Dare County Guardian ad Litem (GAL) volunteer; he and his wife, Dr. Elaine “Lainie” Walls Reed, are the parents of a son they adopted almost 40 years ago through a foster care program. The Reeds have created a designated fund that will benefit both Dare County foster children and the Guardian ad Litem programs in Dare and Currituck counties.

SECU Foundation sponsors production of PBS North Carolina’s 2023 Year of the Trail series

SECU Foundation has announced a new collaboration with PBS North Carolina to serve as the sole presenting sponsor for the statewide public media network’s production of the 2023 NC Year of the Trail series. The initiative launched in January with digital profiles of three North Carolina trails and will continue throughout the year with two program series – Ten to Try: NC Trails and NC State Trail Profiles. The Foundation’s grant will help PBS North Carolina share the recreational and environmental benefits of our state’s extensive trail system while promoting economic development, healthier lifestyles for North Carolinians, and transportation byways.

Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) Receives Golden LEAF Funding To Expand Electrical Apprenticeship High School Courses

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) has received $900,000 in Golden LEAF funding.

The money will be used to expand electrical apprenticeship courses to an additional 99 juniors and seniors at four local high schools – Heidi Trask, Pender, New Hanover, and Ashley.

Black Philanthropy Initiative Announces $2 Million Campaign to Invest in Local Black Communities

The Black Philanthropy Initiative (BPI) has announced a 3-year, $2 million fundraising campaign to significantly increase support to Black communities in Forsyth County. Most of the funds raised will be directed toward BPI’s annual grantmaking programs, with the remaining to its endowment to ensure that grantmaking funding will be available for years to come.
