Event Details

In 2023, the leadership of ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities began leading an effort with Asian Americans Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy, Hispanics in Philanthropy, and Native Americans in Philanthropy to respond to the anticipated retreat of many philanthropic institutions from their commitment to advance racial equity that would result from the Supreme Court's decision in the Students for Fair Admissions case. At that time, the four organizations partnered to create the Racial Equity Advancement and Defense Initiative (READI) with the expressed purpose to promote, expand, and defend race-explicit grantmaking and programming in the field. READI's four-part strategy - Legal Support for nonprofits and small foundations, Strategic Communications and Narrative Change, Philanthropic Organizing, and Field Education and Professional Development - included the production and release of the READI Legal Landscape Analysis in June of 2025. The READI Legal Landscape Analysis was designed to provide philanthropic and nonprofit leaders with accurate legal information and other tools to make informed decisions as they continue to advance their respective racial equity work.

E. Bomani Johnson, Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives, and Candice Simmons, Program Manager of Strategic Initiatives, will lead a presentation and discussion that will cover the following:

  • An overview of READI and its core work, and major accomplishments of the last 12 months.
  • The current communications landscape and how READI’s communications tools and messaging guidance can support your work.
  • An in-depth overview of the current version of the READI Legal Landscape Analysis and how it can help organizations understand legal risks, identify strategies, and move with greater confidence.
  • Practical considerations for communicating about race-explicit grantmaking, DEI, and equity-centered work in the current environment.

This session is open to both philanthropy-infrastructure organizations and their members.
