Are you an experienced development professional with a passion for helping North Carolinians achieve their philanthropic goals at a thriving community foundation? This role works closely with prospective and current donors, as well as professional advisors, across eastern North Carolina to develop and implement charitable giving strategies through the North Carolina Community Foundation. The position also supports the development efforts of affiliate community foundations throughout the region.

The ideal candidate brings a strong commitment to philanthropy, charitable giving, and prospect development. In this role, the Foundation’s Development Team leads the process of establishing new funds and guiding donors in creating meaningful, lasting impact.

 

We are currently seeking a qualified candidate for Development Officer, serving eastern North Carolina. The following counties are included in our eastern NC region: Beaufort, Bertie, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Duplin, Gates, Greene, Hertford, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Pitt, Robeson, and Sampson.

The North Carolina Community Foundation transforms the collective generosity of our donors into a permanent source of community support, with a focus on the state’s rural areas. NCCF partners with donors and a network of affiliates to sustain over 1,300 endowments totaling nearly $600 million in assets. More than $360 million has been awarded as grants to charitable organizations and scholarships to students, creating stronger communities for generations to come. 

Core responsibilities include:



  • Provide quality charitable gift planning services to prospective donors – individuals, families, businesses, nonprofits, private foundations – by listening to their needs and creating customized gift plans to establish their own fund, make a gift to a component fund, or through a planned  gift
  • Demonstrate expertise in charitable giving, complex gifts and planned gifts, pertinent state and federal laws, and industry best practices, and advance NCCF’s commitment to inspiring philanthropy by sharing expertise and leadership 
  • Strategically develop and maintain relationships with professional advisors to deepen their knowledge of NCCF’s services and encourage client referrals. Work closely with advisors upon client referral, to help determine client’s philanthropic goals, ensure successful gift acceptance and fund establishment or documentation of planned gift 
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit donor, fund, or planned giving prospects through engagement with professional advisors, collaboration with eastern NCCF affiliate community foundations, personal meetings, presentations, phone calls, publications
  • Collaborate with Foundation team members to cultivate relationships with fundholders to enhance their relationship with NCCF, strategically grow their funds, and solicit other gifts. 
  • Collaborate with Foundation team members to plan and support asset development strategies for eastern NCCF affiliate community foundations, including prospective donor and fundholder identification and solicitation, and professional advisor identification and stewardship

  • Working knowledge of planned giving vehicles and tax laws related to charitable giving

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Extensive knowledge and at least five years of nonprofit fundraising and development experience with an emphasis on planned giving and major gifts. Alternatively, at least five or more years working with clients as wealth advisor or attorney and experience in advising around charitable giving
  • Prior experience with a community foundation preferred but not required 
  • Must reside in eastern North Carolina
  • Proficiency with office software, development/CRM databases, computer technology, and basic office management systems
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills; the ability to handle a large and diverse workload; and manage multiple deadlines and tasks efficiently and effectively
  • Enthusiasm for travel throughout eastern North Carolina. Excellent driving record required.
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally work during non-standard hours for meetings and events or for travel

 

The hiring range for this role is $85,000 - $90,000, depending on qualifications and experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package and the opportunity to work with a committed, engaged team.
